TKDA, along with our design partner Carol Ross Barney, worked collaboratively on the LEED Gold Civil Engineering Building for the University of Minnesota-Duluth. With spectacularly functional and beautiful design, the new facility provided much needed room for the quickly expanding Civil Engineering Program when it opened in 2010. The $12.5M facility includes specialized teaching and research laboratories, as well as classrooms, computer labs and administrative offices located in the 34,000 SF two-story structure. “Engineering on Display,” laboratories reach two-stories high and glass walls provide views of engineers at work from outside the building as well as within the halls. The large labs expose the building’s structure, providing examples of engineering principles and the “Building as Teacher” design.
