SUSTAINABILITY

Designing Solutions that Support Communities, the Environment, and Long-Term Performance

At TKDA, we view sustainability as a practical approach for improving the long‑term performance of facilities and infrastructure. Our work focuses on resilience, efficiency, and supporting the people and communities that create clean, healthy environments.

Strong client relationships and an understanding of how facilities and infrastructure operate guide our work. We partner with clients responsible for complex, long‑lived systems to align sustainability goals with operational needs and capital planning. This holistic approach allows environmental performance, resiliency, and asset management to be addressed together, resulting in solutions that reduce environmental impact while improving reliability, adaptability, and capacity.

Our integrated team of engineers, architects, and planners collaborates early in planning and design, when key decisions have the greatest impact on long‑term outcomes. This early coordination supports informed decisions that balance cost, durability, and environmental considerations, allowing sustainability goals to be embedded directly into project solutions.

Featured Sustainability Case Studies

Sustainability is embedded in how we deliver transportation, industrial and manufacturing, energy, buildings and sites, and water projects. By considering immediate project needs and long-term impacts, we help clients achieve solutions that deliver measureable value over time.

Owning Our Impact

As an engineering, architecture, and planning consultant firm, we impact ecosystems and people through our projects and through how we operate our business. Our companywide sustainability plan is designed to address both means of impact. The plan directs where we deepen our technical capabilities and how we scale best practices throughout the firm so that we bring the best solutions to our clients. It also looks inward at our own governance, the wellbeing of our staff, and the environmental impacts of our operations. Our plan has three pillars:

Corporate Leadership

Ethics, transparency, and a culture of care are central to keeping TKDA a sustainable organization. TKDA is an 100% employee-owned company. The goals in this category ensure that our practice stays aligned with our values, as expected by all our stakeholders.

Project Benchmarking

Increasingly, our clients are asked to track detailed project or construction information. The goals in this category ensure that we are training employees on appropriate tools and technology and spreading best practices across the firm.

Community Wellbeing

Our culture of care extends to the wellbeing of the communities in which we work. The goals in this category encourage practices that lead to net-positive and regenerative outcomes beyond the project site.

Community Investment

Our team is committed to making a positive, lasting impact by supporting community wellbeing, fostering meaningful partnerships, and investing in the people and places connected to our work. TKDA’s Corporate Giving Program seeks to create lasting improvement to equity in our industry and sustainable communities by focusing investment of a percentage of annual profits in the following areas.

K12 STEM education programs targeting disadvantaged communities

We support programs that expand early access to STEM education, helping introduce students to careers in engineering, architecture, planning, and other related fields.

Higher education scholarships and grants aimed to build diversity in our industry

We invest in scholarships that support students pursuing education in engineering, architecture, planning, and related fields, with a focus on increasing diversity and representation across the profession.

Food and shelter security for the communities in which we operate

We partner with local organizations to address essential, helping ensure individuals and families have the support they need to thrive.
