Deteriorated beyond repair, the Griggs Street Pedestrian Bridge over I-94 in Saint Paul needed to be removed and replaced immediately. MnDOT commissioned TKDA to provide preliminary and final bridge and roadway design services on a fast-track schedule.
TKDA minimized traffic impact in the project area by determining it was feasible to reuse the center pier footing of the old bridge. The replacement bridge consists of two 126 foot long pre-stressed concrete beam spans and semi-integral abutments. TKDA’s design included aesthetic elements to enhance the look of the bridge. The superstructure is comprised of a concrete deck, architectural concrete parapet and ornamental metal railing. TKDA kept the project on schedule by delivering full certified plans, specifications and the cost estimate on time to MnDOT, approximately one month after receiving notice to proceed.
