Robert Street Bridge

Connecting Communities Across the Mississippi River

For over a century, the Robert Street Bridge has played an essential role in connecting downtown Saint Paul to the southern Twin Cities, supporting daily commutes, local businesses, and regional movement across the Mississippi River. TKDA provided engineering and architectural design services for the bridge, a landmark reinforced-concrete arch structure. Completed in 1926, the bridge replaced an outdated crossing and significantly improved capacity, safety, and connectivity. Its multi-span configuration, including a prominent through-arch main span, responded to complex site constraints while delivering a durable, high-capacity transportation link.

The bridge’s design reflects an integrated approach that balanced structural performance with civic presence. Collaboration between engineers and architects resulted in a structure that emphasizes proportion, material expression, and long-term reliability. Today, the Robert Street Bridge remains a defining piece of regional infrastructure, demonstrating TKDA’s early leadership in complex bridge design and its legacy of delivering infrastructure that supports mobility and community connectivity.
