After conducting the geotechnical investigation for the light rail tunnels and designing the structure for Metro Transit’s Blue Line passenger station under Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, TKDA’s Underground and Geotechnical Engineering group has supported Metro Transit’s MSP Airport light rail tunnel maintenance program with ongoing inspection, analysis, design, and construction observation services focused on groundwater infiltration and liner defects. Initial efforts identified cracking and leakage conditions that led to winter ice buildup within the tunnel—creating maintenance challenges and operational impacts for the LRT system. TKDA’s team conducted detailed field investigations, mapping leaking cracks, joints, and voids to define the extent and severity of deterioration within the tunnel system.
