Allouez Ore Docks

Connecting Resources to Opportunity Along Lake Superior

On the edge of Lake Superior, the Allouez Bay Ore Docks stand as a defining piece of infrastructure that helped shape the growth of the Midwest. As one of TKDA’s earliest engineering projects, the docks were designed to efficiently transfer iron ore from railcars to ships, linking Minnesota’s mining region to steel producers across the Great Lakes. While portions of the docks are no longer operational, their presence remains a powerful symbol of the region’s industrial heritage. The project reflects our long-standing commitment to designing infrastructure that connects communities and supports economic growth.

Location: Wisconsin

Client: Northern Pacific Railway

Market: Transportation

Market Segment: Rail

TKDA’s work focused on developing a reliable, high-capacity system that streamlined the transition between rail and maritime transport. The dock infrastructure leveraged gravity-fed loading concepts and integrated rail connections, allowing ore to be transferred quickly and efficiently from incoming trains to waiting vessels. This seamless movement of materials reduced handling time, improved operational efficiency, and supported the high volumes required to meet growing industrial demand.
