TKDA provided engineering design and construction management services for the extension of the Lead Track from the Ono Yard to the San Bernardino Intermodal Facility. This project increases the ability to assemble and hold outbound trains, as well as reduces switching time obstructing mainline movements. This project will resolve the train congestion along the busy freight and passenger corridor.
The proposed fourth lead track extension is 4.5 miles long, constructed along the existing BNSF corridor that parallels the I-215. To accommodate the proposed new track alignment, partial and full property acquisitions were required outside the BNSF property and the City’s right-of-way. Several configuration options were developed, intending to minimize property acquisitions, utility relocation, and address city concerns. TKDA designed the relocation of 2,500 LF of roadways, storm sewer, sanitary sewer, fire suppression, street lighting, signal and communications, water mains, sound walls, private utilities, and coordinated the drainage connection to the Caltrans system.
The project was split into several phases: design, demolition, and site improvements. After the design phase was completed, TKDA coordinated the demolition of 24 parcels, facilitated the contractor bid process, and oversaw construction activities. Construction work windows comply with the City of San Bernardino curfew, including weekend work and night shifts.
