Natural Gas Plant Control Facility

Delivering a Modern Control Facility that Elevates Plant Performance and Supports Staff Well-Being

The Inver Grove Heights natural gas plant had outgrown its 5,600 SF control building, and what began as a planned renovation quickly shifted direction. Site constraints, structural limitations, and the cost of relocating staff made expansion impractical, prompting the need for a new facility that could support modern operations and improve the daily experience for plant staff.

TKDA completed a facility needs assessment, operational programming study, and cost estimate before designing a two story, 20,160 SF control facility. The building brings together offices, shop areas, training and support spaces, and a state of the art control room with advanced technology and clear views of the plant.

Site improvements included extending city water, replacing the septic system, coordinating utilities and access, and phasing construction around ongoing operations in collaboration with the CMAR. Once the new building was complete, the existing structure was renovated for utility rooms.

Working closely with the plant manager and staff, TKDA shaped the facility to support both performance and well‑being. Outdoor access and connections to nature were intentionally incorporated to give staff who spend long hours in front of screens a place to step away, reset, and recharge.

The completed facility delivers modern, flexible space that enhances monitoring capabilities, supports staff well‑being, and meets long term operational needs.
