Elk Run Design-Build

As the Design Lead for the Shafer Contracting Co. Design-Build Team, TKDA’s design for the new TH 52 interchange featured a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) that was one of the first of its kind constructed in Minnesota and one of only a handful of DDIs in the country. The new interchange and the connecting county roadway improvements supported the new Elk Run development. In selecting TKDA’s design, the Minnesota Department of Transportation recognized that this innovative interchange type improves the efficiency of turning traffic and minimizes conflicts by changing the traditional traffic flow.

TKDA was responsible for all aspects of the project’s design, including three multi-lane roundabouts on the county road system. The roundabouts and the new interchange were designed to support the traffic volumes projected from TKDA’s traffic studies and the anticipated levels of vehicle and pedestrian traffic associated with nearby expansion.

In addition to the preliminary and final design of the proposed improvements, TKDA was responsible for public involvement assistance, utility coordination, traffic control, updating the project’s Environmental Assessment document, water resources engineering, permitting, roundabout and interchange lighting, and landscape architecture/visual design coordination.
