TKDA’s in-house team of engineers, designers, planners, surveyors, and specialized experts draw on each other’s strengths to offer a wide range of services for your transportation needs. Woven together, our teams form a strong firm, ensuring seamless coordination and communication to efficiently tackle complex projects.

National Experience

Our long-standing transportation practice is built on trusted relationships with counties, state Departments of Transportation, municipalities, and design-build partners. Our highly engaged team is invested in providing innovative, lasting solutions, from border to border, coast to coast.

Our Solutions

Bridges and Structures

From inspection to design through construction, we deliver safe and innovative structures that improve transportation mobility and reduce future maintenance costs. Our designs span new builds and rehabilitation of bridges, retaining walls, culverts, and sign structures. Additionally, we work with Class I railroads to provide coordination services for successful infrastructure planning, design, and construction.

Transportation Planning

Our planning work is rooted in a deep understanding of transportation system engineering and design, and a firm belief that the best solutions for these complex systems are found in comprehensive community and stakeholder engagement. The resulting planning solutions leverage existing infrastructure investments and broad user and operator insights to create smart and resilient transportation systems.

Survey and Geospatial

Surveying provides the groundwork for successful projects, and we use new technology and traditional field surveys to collect highly accurate and reliable data. These methods increase the accuracy and efficiency of our services and provide a tool to visualize projects from start to finish. Our state-of-the-art equipment and software helps with complex construction stakeouts, accurate as-builds, and renditions of existing conditions.

Highway and Roadway

Our transportation planners, engineers, and designers understand the importance of efficient transportation infrastructure systems, and we deliver innovative solutions that improve safety and mobility. Whether designing new roadways and highways or improving existing ones, our expertise allows us to tackle complex challenges to create transportation networks that support economic growth and improve communities.

Pedestrian and Bicycle

Our team creates vibrant trails and greenways, connecting your community and residents to outdoor treasures. From concept to construction, we improve convenience and safety for multimodal infrastructure. We treat every project as an opportunity to create sustainable, healthy enhancements so communities thrive and active, enjoyable transportation is accessible to all ages and abilities.

Community Engagement

At TKDA, we believe a data-driven, community-centered, and transparent engagement process is the catalyst for a successful project. We are skilled facilitators and believe that engagement is best when you meet the community where they are at, so we prioritize an open and honest approach to identify issues of concern, provide appropriate input, and actively participate in developing positive outcomes.

Traffic

Traffic specialists design solutions that enhance quality of life, reduce risk, support multiple travel modes, and improve operational capacity. We understand that safe, cost-effective transportation infrastructure is fundamental to the success of communities, so we provide traffic planning that includes corridor studies, traffic impact studies, congestion management, and traffic engineering.

Water Resources

With the ever-changing regulatory environment, it’s important to understand development impacts and water resources management strategies. Our team specializes in planning, designing, permitting, and the construction of complex hydraulic, hydrologic, and water quality projects that minimize costs while providing flood control, enhancing water quality, and protecting wetlands, lakes, and rivers.

Grant Writing

Securing funding can be a complex and competitive process. TKDA offers comprehensive grant writing services to help clients navigate this difficult terrain and maximize their chances of success. By engaging early in the project development process, TKDA can identify viable funding opportunities, align project scopes with grant criteria, navigate complex application requirements, and lead the effort through the submission.

Success Stories

The following projects showcase the enduring partnerships we forge and our dedication to quality, safety, and innovative solutions. Our approach is grounded in collaboration, technical expertise, and a commitment to delivering solutions that last.

Dale Street Bridge Reconstruction

To improve pedestrian safety and traffic operations at the Dale Street – I-94 interchange, Ramsey County reconstructed Dale Street between Iglehart Avenue and University Avenue, including the Dale Street Bridge over I-94. TKDA worked on public engagement, preliminary and final design, contract administration, and construction inspection services. The reconstructed bridge improves traffic flow and pedestrian safety at this busy connection to I-94 and honors the Rondo neighborhood displaced by this freeway.

East Bush Lake Road

Since its construction in 1960, the East Bush Lake Road and the I-494 interchange provided access to eastbound I-494, but not westbound I-494. The Normandale Lake area experienced significant growth, generating heavy traffic congestions and resulting in the need for the westbound I-494 access. TKDA prepared construction plans and specifications for the new inverted loop bridge design for the westbound I-494 on-ramp and the reconstruction of the existing eastbound I-494 on-ramp.
