To improve safety and reduce crashes, Dakota County and MnDOT needed to design and construct a grade-separated interchange at TH 52 and CSAH 86 (280th Street/Rochester Boulevard). This project is part of an on-going vision to improve the safety of TH 52 between I-90 in southern Minnesota and I-494 in the Twin Cities.
TKDA led the preliminary design phase including development of interchange concepts, a geometric layout of the preferred alternative, 30 percent construction plans and preliminary bridge plans. TKDA’s plans included numerous options for interchange types and the CSAH 86 alignment. After conducting a thorough alternative analysis, TKDA concluded the best option was a partial cloverleaf interchange. With the preferred alternative selected just 11 weeks after project initiation, TKDA was then hired to prepare the roadway and bridge plans, special provisions and cost estimates for the interchange and road reconstruction.
