As part of a nationwide effort to improve overall airport security the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) required significant security upgrades at MSP. The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) retained TKDA to design the Security Identification Display Area (SIDA)/Secured Incursion Control Project to help meet these new security needs.
The project, which was funded by TSA, included the installation of security checkpoints, security cameras, automated vehicle identification system, automated airfield vehicle gate with guardhouse and a new digital recording system. Security checkpoints were added at five locations where vehicles could enter the Security Identification Display Area (SIDA). Security cameras were also added to monitor the checkpoints and all automated access gates. To complete this project TKDA upgraded the airfield fiber optic communication system and overcame many challenges related to the existing security system.
