After operating for many years with two parallel runways and one crosswind runway, MSP decided to add a new runway to increase the airport’s capacity. TKDA provided the development and construction of Runway 17/35 to expand MSP’s operations by allowing for three simultaneous landings or departures.
The addition of a runway at a major airport within an urban area created many challenges. The new runway required relocation of the airport’s cargo facility and construction of additional aprons and taxiways. TKDA worked closely with airport staff during the approval process and construction and coordinated construction access. TKDA also worked closely with airport staff, tenants and consultants in developing phasing plans that kept the airport fully operational during construction. Projects were phased to allow for relocation of tenants to new facilities prior to demolition of their existing facilities.
