With its new 115,000 SF general office and service center, Rochester Public Utilities (RPU) wanted to support its water and electric operations more. RPU serves residential, commercial, and industrial customers within a 40-square-mile area. The facility houses RPU’s general offices, material warehousing, system operations, vehicle garage and services area, and support services. TKDA’s design included service equipment such as overhead cranes to assist engine and boom repairs, and complete fit-up for work on hydraulic units. The facility also has support services such as weld shops and repair shops. Approximately 20 vehicles can be stored inside; 24 more can be stored at an outside sheltered storage area. Mechanical controls monitor the garage’s interior environment, and eight detectors monitor the air for engine pollutants. A buildup of carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide triggers two gas-fired systems that purge the area with tempered fresh air. Other interior environmental controls include ventilation and electric slab storage heating.
