In 2004, the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) embarked on a long-term program to maintain and rehabilitate concrete pavements at MSP by resealing joints and repairing minor surface defects. TKDA assisted the MAC in the development of a multi-year plan to rehabilitate all airfield concrete pavements on an approximately 15-year cycle.
TKDA staff worked with MAC engineers and maintenance personnel to establish priorities based primarily on age and condition of pavements. Because the amount of rehabilitation required annually exceeded the capacity of existing MAC maintenance staff, the Commission authorized an ongoing series of annual joint sealing contracts beginning in 2006. Approximately half of each year’s rehabilitation work was performed by contract, with the remainder performed by maintenance staff.
