Metro Transit’s initiative to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions required careful planning to make sure the quality of service was not affected. During the expansion of the Light Rail Operations and Maintenance Facility near Minneapolis’s Phillips neighborhood, TKDA designed a geothermal system to heat and cool the enlarged train storage area.
Due to space constraints, TKDA determined the only available location for the wells was beneath the new building. TKDA’s innovative design helped the facility decrease emissions without having a negative impact on operations. The new geothermal system saves Metro Transit an average of $45,000 per year in energy expenses.
