The 65,000 SF Johnny Bird Community Center is a multi-use facility for the Three Affiliated Tribes of Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara. Zoned in three parts, the facility required careful planning and design to meet the diverse needs of the community. TKDA provided engineering and architectural services to bring the many facets of this project to reality.
Nestled near the top of a large bluff overlooking the Chief Four Bears community below, the building features dining areas, a community kitchen, memorial hall, day care, food shelf, gymnasium with three basketball courts, locker rooms, aerobics area, leasable office space, conference rooms and more. The design takes advantage of southern exposure for daylighting and passive solar heating. A large canopy covers the main entrance and drop-off lanes, and the site provides parking for 150 cars. Stormwater is controlled by an earthen dike and a series of underground retention tanks. An outdoor area is reserved for Native American funeral services with an offering table at the highest point on the site. Additional outdoor features include a child’s play area and an elder patio.
