TKDA served as the design lead for the Shafer design-build team on the new TH 52 interchange in Pine Island, Minnesota. The TKDA team proposed one of the first of its kind Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI). It is one of a handful of DDIs in the country. In selecting TKDA’s design, the Minnesota Department of Transportation recognized that the DDI improves efficiency of turning traffic and minimizes conflicts by changing the traditional traffic flow. Benefits of the DDI at this site resulted in a high capacity, traffic calming, simple two-phase signal operation and easy pedestrian/bicycle operations. The project received an Engineering Excellence Honor Award from ACEC of Minnesota.

Under the leadership of the TKDA team, we successfully weaved our way through all necessary reviews and approvals to implement a DDI that met or exceeded the expectations of all parties. This was due, in no small part to the proactive nature of the TKDA team in researching DDI issues and lessons learned to resolve each and every issue that arose. They were innovative in their problem solving and extremely responsive to the needs of MnDOT and our local project partners.”
