The Cherokee Regional Trail overlooks the Mississippi River Valley with panoramic views of Saint Paul. The 1.9 mile bituminous trail provides a safe connection between Cherokee Regional Park and Harriet Island Regional Trail, offering separate bicycle and pedestrian paths, as well as on-street segments where right-of-way is constrained.
The site’s topography and geometry presented significant obstacles as the trail followed the river bluff’s edge and then descended down the bluff to the river plain below. Close proximity of the trail to the bluff line required the use of cantilevered concrete slabs and reinforced concrete and sheet pile retaining walls. Rest areas, scenic overlooks and parking were also improved and restored to enhance the trail user and park visitor’s experience.
