Integrated Transportation Solutions

Transportation agencies face evolving operational, regulatory, and infrastructure demands. TKDA supports owners and operators with multidisciplinary engineering solutions designed to perform across the entire asset lifecycle.

Transportation Facilities

TKDA designs and supports transportation facilities that enable safe, efficient operations, from maintenance bases and passenger facilities to operations centers and support buildings.

King Street Coach Yard Improvements

For more than 15 years, TKDA has partnered with Amtrak to design and support the Seattle King Street Coach Yard Maintenance Facilities. TKDA’s design services have improved the capabilities, capacity, efficiency, and working conditions of this essential transportation facility.

Through a multiphase program of new maintenance and support buildings, targeted repairs, and yard expansion and reconfiguration, TKDA has helped Amtrak meet immediate and long-term equipment maintenance needs while balancing operational demands, stakeholder requirements, and Practical Sustainability measures.

Class I and Commuter Rail Shared‑Use Corridors

Shared‑use corridors demand careful coordination. At TKDA, we deliver solutions that prioritize safety, continuity of operations, and long‑term system performance.

Platform Design and Construction

TKDA completed engineering design and construction management services of a new 600-foot platform at the existing Amtrak Station in Merced, CA.

The project included a new passenger platform, hand railing, lighting, signage, and intertrack fencing, and required a shallow pier foundation system adjacent to the existing track to minimize impacts on the active rail corridor and potential shoring cost impacts to the project.

State of Good Repair (SOGR) & Infrastructure Maintenance

Maintaining infrastructure is essential to reliability, safety, and asset longevity. TKDA helps agencies assess conditions and extend the life of critical infrastructure.

Infrastructure Maintenance

Since 2001, TKDA has served Metropolitan Council’s Metro Transit under multiple Master Contracts, delivering design and construction administration for more than 140 architecture and engineering projects focused on maintaining infrastructure.

Through work such as bus lift replacements, electrical switchgear replacement at bus garages, LRT operations and maintenance facility upgrades, and support facilities preventative maintenance and repair, TKDA has helped Metro Transit assess conditions, extend the life of critical infrastructure, and support safe, reliable operations.

Power Infrastructure

TKDA designs and supports electrical systems that balance performance, resilience, safety, and coordination with utility providers.

IMF Hostler Charging Stations Conversion

TKDA provided design and construction management services for the electrified equipment infrastructure at a South Seattle facility, supporting a major U.S. Class I railroad in converting from diesel to battery electric yard hostlers.

The project included installation of the infrastructure for 12 charging stalls to support the new battery electric trucks. This installation was delivered in coordination with Seattle City Light to ensure reliable power systems for zero emission operations.

Electrification & EV Conversion

Our team supports agencies through integrated planning and engineering solutions that enable reliable, scalable, and future‑ready electric operations.

Battery Electric Locomotive Pilot Project

TKDA was a key partner in an innovative pilot project to demonstrate zero and near-zero emissions with battery electric locomotive technology, supporting a transformative trial to predict overall fuel and emissions reductions and explore the future potential of battery electric locomotives.

TKDA supported this project by providing the design and commissioning services for the custom wayside charger installed in Stockton, California, enabling reliable charging of the Wabtec BEL as it tested efficiency along the Barstow to Stockton route.
