Assistant Group Manager - Structural Engineering

Our employee-owned and multi-disciplined team of engineering and design professionals is looking for an experienced structural engineer with engaging leadership skills and a knowledge of site structural design to join our team as the Assistant Structural Group Manager within our Facilities Engineering division in Saint Paul.   

As the Assistant Group Manager, you will work directly with the Structural Group Manager to cultivate the growth, direction, financial performance, and leadership of our Facilities Engineering Structural team, which focuses on providing structural solutions for education, government, energy, food, and Industrial clients.  As a leader, you will coach and mentor a talented team of engineering professionals and be responsible for their professional development in relation to overall team objectives and their professional aspirations. 

For this position it is assumed your time would be split between group management, lead designer/engineer, and/or project management responsibilities as outlined below: 

  • Overseeing the Structural Registered Engineers and Graduate Engineering staff members (6-8 people) who will direct report to this position.  This includes:
    1. Assist the Group Manager in assigning projects to the defined directed reports, and assist in maintaining utilization of those members.
    2. Mentoring of Direct Reports.
    3. Mid-year and year end reviews of direct reports along with the Group Manager.
  • Lead the development of technical specifications, typical details, design calculation tools and software standards for the structural department.
  • Provide and lead Quality Assurance/Quality Control reviews for structural projects, including review of plan sets and design calculations.
  • Structural Engineer Design Activities including:
    1. Serve as the lead structural on multidiscipline projects or the Project Manager of projects.
    2. Assist in proposals and project development for structural projects including fee estimating, client presentations and interviews, and site inspections.
    3. Prepare structural plans, specifications, design details and construction documents.
  • Assume the duties of the Group Manager when they are unavailable including:
    1. Attend Division planning meetings with other managers.
    2. Approve time sheets, expense reports, etc.
    3. Structural staff assignment and scheduling.

Note: Flexible / hybrid work arrangements (3 days in office / 2 days remote per week) will be considered for self-starter and self-sufficient professionals who have demonstrated an ability to work successfully in a remote work environment.

 Required Qualifications. 

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university in Structural Engineering.
  • Seven (7) + years of progressive experience in structural design of structural steel and reinforced concrete industrial, government, education, and mining projects.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of Minnesota.
  • Previous experience in leading a team of structural engineers in a department or as part of a design team.
  • Previous experience in responding to requests for proposals, including estimating mechanical fees.
  • Previous experience and ability to prepare studies, technical specifications and construction cost estimates and work with drafters to prepare accurate design drawings.
  • Knowledge associated with working with other disciplines on a larger projects: Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, Structural, etc
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Project, etc.).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and effective verbal and written communication skills; Ability to write specifications and reports and lead and/or participate in discussions during client consultations and project team meetings.
  • Ability to mentor staff members in design.

 Advantageous Qualifications. 

  • Previous experience in RISA 3D.
  • Previous experience with and knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Previous experience in the design of light and heavy industrial projects.
  • Previous experience in project management.
  • Previous experience in business development with a demonstrated record of tracking and securing new project opportunities.
