Many cities are considering ground storage reservoirs as an effective alternative to elevated towers for finished water storage reservoirs. In spring 2009, the City of South St. Paul commissioned TKDA for the design and construction oversight of two 550,000 gallon water storage reservoirs and a booster pump station. A project requirement was to continue to provide water service with the existing system in use until the new facility was in place and operating. The wire-wound, pre-stressed concrete tanks and new booster station were being constructed next to the existing facilities and presented a challenge due to the limited space. Once construction was complete, the existing reservoir was taken out of service, demolished, and removed.
