"prj49":{"title":"DCTC • Emmisions Inventory Baseline Determination", "date": "Rosemount, Minnesota", "descr":"On June 17, 2010 the President of Dakota County Technical College signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. The objective of the presidents' climate initiative is to set goals and take steps to develop a comprehensive plan for climate neutrality. As part of that initiative the college commissioned an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions. TKDA prepared an Emissions Inventory and Baseline Determination Study to establish the level of emissions from electricity, heating, commuting and air travel. This report presented the college with their current performance levels, identified emissions reduction opportunities, and recommended next steps toward achieving climate neutrality. This inventory report is a living document. The data will be updated annually, and the report itself every 2 years. The baseline report provides the starting point to track the success of future projects directed toward improving energy efficiency, reducing energy consumption, and decreasing carbon emissions. "},

TKDA is providing mechanical and electrical engineering services, building fire protection systems, and railroad coordination.

The revitalized Union Depot will incorporate in one historic location transit modes that exist today with others that are programmed in the region's long-range plan. This facility will allow for a seamless transfer among transportation modes and will serve regional, state, and community needs. When complete, the hub will be designed to accommodate Central Corridor light rail transit, Metro Transit, bus service, Amtrak and Midwest High-Speed rail.

TKDA provided structural engineering on the original Union Depot building, which was completed in 1923. TKDA completed the planning, design, and construction assistance required to bring on line 1 MW of solar thermal capacity that feeds into Saint Paul's city-wide district heating system and the RiverCentre convention center, where the 144 solar collectors are installed. At the time of construction, this project represents one of the first commercial thermal solar projects integrated into a district heating system in the United States and is the largest project of its type in the Midwest. A traffic study of the corridor was completed to account for the future traffic with a commuter rail station and expanded Metro Transit park-and-ride lot. Preliminary design tasks included a bridge type study and access, circulation, and parking options at the adjacent lot. The preferred option includes a seven-span bridge that will accommodate a future circulatory roadway and additional parking spaces under the bridge. "},
"prj53":{"title":"Reservoir and Booster Station", "date": "South St. Paul, Minnesota", "descr":"Many cities are considering ground storage reservoirs as an effective alternative to elevated towers for finished water storage reservoirs. In spring 2009, the City of South St. Paul commissioned TKDA for the design and construction oversight of two 550,000 gallon water storage reservoirs and a booster pump station. A project requirement was to continue to provide water service with the existing system in use until the new facility was in place and operating. The wire-wound, pre-stressed concrete tanks and new booster station were being constructed next to the existing facilities and presented a challenge due to the limited space. Once construction was complete, the existing reservoir was taken out of service, demolished, and removed. "},
"prj54":{"title":"Park Master Plans", "date": "Newport, Minnesota", "descr":"A fresh vision for an aging park system was the goal of a recent park master plan study conducted by the City of Newport Parks Commission. Upcoming requirements for park infrastructure repairs caused the Park Commission to reevaluate their existing parks, and determine if changes should be made prior to making significant investments in their facilities. Many things function well within their current parks; however, with increasing demands for limited municipal resources, Commission members wanted to invest future resources wisely to best serve the changing needs of their community.

The resulting master plans provide a framework for phased development at the City's three major parks as funds become available. Close attention was given to the opportunities and limitations for different kinds of development at each of the parks, as well as looking at the parks comprehensively to make sure that all desired services were being offered without having costly and unnecessary redundancies within the system. "prj57":{"title":"Elk Run Highway Interchange", "date": "Pine Island, Minnesota", "descr":"As the Design Lead for the Shafer Design-Build Team, TKDA's proposed design for the new TH 52 interchange features a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) that will be one of the first of its kind in the State of Minnesota and one of only a handful of DDI's in the country. In selecting the TKDA's design, the Minnesota Department of Transportation recognized that this innovative interchange type improves the efficiency of turning traffic and minimizes conflicts by changing the traditional traffic flow. The graphic above shows how the opposing through-lanes intersect each other and flip at the middle of the interchange. Other benefits of this type of interchange at this site are high capacity, traffic calming, simple two-phase signal operation, and easy pedestrian/bicycle operations. "},

The project included repair and replacement of deteriorated features and accurate duplication of the original, based on historical, pictorial or physical evidence. The non-historic steel railings attached to masonry bollards were replaced with historically appropriate ornamental metal railings. "},

In 2009, the FHWA approved performance-based design for the project, which will meet more than 90 percent of the needs while saving costs. The design solution allows for a phased construction approach. Initially, six of the eight system-to-system interchange ramps will be constructed.
